PDF preflight software for Mac: what to check

Preflight is evidence gathering, not a guarantee. Start with the printer's specification, inspect the PDF against it and keep unknown conditions visible for production review.

1. Confirm page and bleed boxes

Compare MediaBox, TrimBox, BleedBox and CropBox dimensions. Mixed page sizes or a BleedBox equal to the TrimBox may need printer confirmation.

2. Inspect placed-image resolution

Calculate effective DPI from pixel dimensions and placed size. A source image with many pixels can still be low resolution when enlarged on the page.

3. Review fonts and color evidence

Record font resources and available embedding clues, plus image color spaces and ICC evidence. Mark missing evidence as unknown rather than passed.

4. Export findings for the printer

Share the page-level report with the source hash and the printer's own requirements. The printer or production specialist remains the final approval gate.
